I just got back from vacation! (hence the lack of posts) and it was just what I needed. Time to reevaluate goals, reconnect with my family, and reconfigure life.

With all of the couponing, sometimes life can get centered around getting things, and then couponing gets…well pretty boring, and I forget why I’m really doing this in the first place.

So if you are feeling a little burnt out by couponing, take a break, even just for a few days, and then come back to it, you’ll have a fresh perspective on the topic, and a little more method before the madness.

Two things I learned while on my vacation:

No. 1 Wait for deals:

We’ve all been there, its 9 o’clock at night and you realize a coupon is expiring the very next day! You only have minutes to put it to use, or let it go to the other side, without anything to show for it. So what do you do? I am learning sometimes the best thing is to wait for a sale.

For example, there was a coupon for $0.75 off of a whole chicken, and no store near me had the chicken for less than $2.00 lb, the smallest chicken being about 4 lbs, that’s eight dollars, $7.25 would have been the cheapest price for me with the coupon. It ended up expiring and I admit I was a little sad to see it go.

But, this week at Albertsons Market near me a whole chicken is on sale for only $0.49 a lb! Thats a good deal, and well worth the wait. I can buy a 14 lb chicken for the same price I would have paid weeks ago with a coupon! So remember the ideal scenario is to have a sale at a store plus a coupon, if you only have a coupon, i would try to wait for a deal. Learn your stores, and you will learn the best way for you.

No. 2 Take Kitchen Inventory:

The other thing I learned, is to take inventory. Figure out what you have in your cupboards. Ask yourself “what are some things I cook with or use regularly that I would like to find coupons for?” What are some things in my cupboards I may have purchased six months ago and really haven’t used, because we really don’t eat that? Did I just buy it because It was cheap? These types of questions are a form or taking inventory and will help you discover what really works for you.

Obviously, there is no sense in stocking up 20 bags of cheap peanuts, if you don’t even like them or worse have a peanut allergy. Its sounds ridiculous, right? But as your learning to coupon you may be tempted to stock pile on things you won’t even need or use just because its so cheap!

Make a rule for yourself, if you are not going to use it, and its free, donate it. If you are not going to use it and it was not free, you make want to think this through a bit more before purchasing: because 10 boxes of something that is only fifty cents still ads up to $5.00 that you could have strategically focused elsewhere in your budget. Take inventory and know what your family needs, and what you and your family will actually use. You already are a smart shopper, but focus in and hopefully become an even smarter shopper.

That’s what I learned this week, as I thought through some things on my vacation from couponing!
